I was born on January 9, 1942 and I thought it might be interesting to see what was happening around the world on that date.

The world was in the middle of the second world war and it appears from the New York Times that day, that the tide of the war against the Japanese was turning in the Allies favor

Sevastopol which was Russia’s great black sea naval base on the southwestern tip of the Crimea finally ended what was a long siege by the Nazis. The Soviet army ran the Germans completely out of Sevastopol, and in the process cut off important tank forces. They also isolated large enemy units.

At the same time, Singapore was in great peril. The Japanese tank forces had broken through the western Milan defenses which drove the defenders south, and they were threatened from the rear by enemy infiltration. The line that they were on stood only 50 miles north of Koala Lumpur, the great rubber and railways center .

American submarines, were sinking Japanese transports with great success, but the Japanese were winning most battles

I can’t help but contrast the bipartisan effort in support of the war at that time with what is happening in this country now. It doesn’t seem to me that there is any true patriotism by the Republicans in this country. All they seem to care about is seeing their name on social media. When you have people like Marjorie Taylor Greene, claiming that 6 billion people Illegally crossed our border the truth seems to be irrelevant,. It is almost laughable because there are just under 8 billion people in the entire world. Truth no longer seems to matter.  It is hard to maintain optimism but when you look at what is happening in Michigan  And Arizona there seems to be a turning point that hopefully has been reached. Those two swing states have begun leaning a deeper shade of blue, and the Republicans are simply doubling down on losing messages. 2024 will be a very important election for the future of this country.
